Is it tabu?

There has been a lot of debate about whether is is morally wrong to sleep with co-workers. I think the question has some layers that must be identified before this question can be answered:

1. What industry do you work in? If your industry is highly competitive and people work long hours (i.e. doctors, lawyers, hospitality) where it is difficult to meet people outside of work, then it is NOT morally wrong to sleep with co-workers as that may be your only option for companionship. If, however, you work at a coffee shop for 4 hours/day, then it is morally wrong, and will likely be awkward to work together.


2. How old are you? I've been working since I was 16 and have slept with several co-workers. In your late teens it is much more difficult to go back to work to see your conquest as hormones (and emotions) are running rampant. However, if you sleep with a co-worker in your late twenties, it is much easier to pretend like nothing happened (if that's how you want it); which may be a little morally wrong. :)


3. Where is it going? If you sleep with a co-worker who is into you, but you don't feel the same, then it IS morally wrong to sleep with him. It is also morally wrong to sleep with a co-worker just to prove that you can (conquest). However, if you feel attracted to your co-worker and you want to potentially have a relationship then it is okay to sleep with him...but you may want to try dating first.

Many people fear sleeping with their co-workers because of HR policy. It has been my extensive experience that people in HR are usually policy-violating machines, seriously. But, depending on the size of your organization, you can take a few actions to protect yourself from getting fired if caught sleeping with your co-worker:

• Get some dirt on the head of HR


• Become good friends with people in HR so that you can know what type of story they would actually believe if you got caught


• Make sure that you don't get caught


• Swear to your co-worker that you will deny everything if you get caught


• Don't make googly eyes at your "conquest" while at work
